Church Services at St Peter's

The Feast of the Assumption

This is the day when many churches celebrate the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  In fact we will be using the readings for this day in our services on Sunday.  The picture alongside is a very modern representation of Mary being carried into heaven.  In the gospel reading Mary has visited her relative Elisabeth and speaks the words that have become very familiar to many of us.  You may have sung it or said it yourselves, it is called the Magnificat.  The Magnificat is Mary's hymn of praise spoken in response to her cousin Elizabeth's greeting and blessing.  Finding herself pregnant after the angel Gabriel's visit, Mary went to Elizabeth's house to see if Elizabeth was also pregnant like the angel had said.  Elizabeth was six months along in her pregnancy with John the Baptist who leapt inside her womb when Mary arrived.  Elizabeth exclaimed, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!”  Mary's response is referred to as the Magnificat because in Latin, magnificat, which means "magnify," "glorify," or "exalt," is the first word of her response.  In this reply, Mary glorified God for blessing her and for His faithfulness to Israel.

This Week’s Readings are: - Psalm 45: 10 – end, Galatians 4: 4-7 & Luke 1: 46-55
